The Ignition Interlock Device

After your 2nd DUI conviction, the court will require you to have an Ignition Interlock Device installed at your own expense. This can cost anywhere from $100-$500 to install and a monthly fee of $85. The device must be installed in any vehicle you own, lease, or operate and this includes vehicles you operate at work.

Once installed, the Ignition Interlock Device requires you to pass a breath test before your vehicle will start. If you blow more than a .02 blood alcohol reading, your vehicle will not start. In addition, you need to bring the device to the Registry of Motor Vehicles every 30 days, so they can upload your records.

If you qualify for a hardship license, you will be required to use the Ignition Interlock Device for the duration of that license plus two years following that. If you do not qualify for a hardship license, you will be required to use the Ignition Interlock Device for two years after your license is reinstated.

Your failure to comply with Ignition Interlock Device requirements will result in your license being revoked for 10 years to life.
